Newbie from Tassie :)

Hi all!
I've been stalking this site for information for a little while, it's been very useful and informative, and I figured why not just join up?
I live in Tasmania, Australia.I only have one chicken, but it's a start, lol. I did have 2 roosters but I sent them to my friends farm because I doubt they would have been getting me any brownie points with the neighbours at 4am!
My 6yo son loves his chicken, I think it thinks it's a darn dog! It greets him at the doorstep, he shares his food with it, they play together and he often sneaks it inside where it snuggles in the chair and watches TV with him, lol.
Anyway, looking forward to learning some things and having a chat,especially with anyone else who has a crazy chookdog, lol

G'day to you. Did you know we have a large aussie community and a great thread "Australia, six states and one funny little island? They could give you better advice about raising chickens in your area that we (USA) could.

As a pet, chickens can be delightful. Otherwise they prefer the company of at least a buddy or two, since they are flock animals. Going solo does encourage interaction with humans though.

She sounds like quite a girl.

I am planning to get some more chickens, she's laying now so I'm waiting on some fertilised eggs for her to adopt.
I have no idea what kind she is, but she's black and shiny, lol.
My son loves her to death, she makes a great pet and is quite tolerant of him giving her cuddles and playing with her. And he sees her eggs as her present to him because she loves him, lol

Without seeing a photo I can't be absolutely positive, but given your location and description, the odds are very good that you have a Black Australorp. They are my favorite standard breed chicken as they are very hardy, calm and gentle, and great layers of large, brown eggs. Good luck with your flock.

She actually has quite small white eggs. It's her first season laying, she's only about 7 months old,is it usual for small eggs at first?
