Just thought I'd throw the desert part in there, since I've been lurking around the duck section and there are so many people from wet and humid areas! We get rain for like a week a year and it's such a drag.
I'm semi new to poultry. My parents and grandparents have both raised all different kinds of poultry at different points in their life, but it's been a while for them and it's definitely a new experience for me. Most of my expertise deals with furry animals.
However, a few months ago we decided to get chickens: 1 Red Sexlink, 4 Dark Rhode Island Reds, 2 Barred Rock, and 1 Leghorn; a variety to see which breeds we got along with the best. They just started laying eggs last week, and boy do they all have their own individual personalities. I definitely like the personality of the Sexlink the best. She is the bravest and friendliest, and also the leader of the pack. But the RIRs with their iridescent green feathers and the Barred Rock with their white spots are so gorgeous. I feel slightly bad for the Leghorn. Originally we had 2, but we unfortunately lost one to a freak dog accident. The leghorns have been pretty skiddish since they were chicks. They were the last ones to come to the feeder, never ate from our hands, and don't really like to play "I HAVE THE SHINIEST OBJECT AND YOU CAN'T HAVE IT" with the other chickens. They used to stay paired up together, but since we lost one I always felt like the little white leghorn was kind of lonely. She's smaller than the other chickens and isn't as plump.
Anyway, point being: I've pretty much fallen in love with Poultry. Much more recently we've added 2 turkeys and 3 ducks to the equation, and I adore all of them. I've been looking into different ways of raising ducks and have decided to try my hand at pasture raising some Jumbo Pekins. So we will be flattening some land this weekend and beginning to build our little ducky farm! Super excited!!
