Greetings all! We are a small family that is wanting to convert our large backyard to a home for garden, perennials and egg-layer chickens. Buff Orpingtons have our attention because of their fluffiness (seems resistant to cold). Wanting to build a moveable coop that has access to sun and fresh air, (but can be used for the winter too) and will eventually have a system for composting from this, or putting them directly over the garden plots. Still learning about different breeds, never had chickens before. Our greatest challenges will be costs and keeping noise down for happy neighbors. We really really want ducks, but figure they are messier and louder, so maybe in a few years when we get a system down. This has been a dream of ours for many years and we have been secret readers of backyard chickens. A hardy hello!

Hello! Welcome to BYC!! :frow

My ducks weren't very loud. At least not compared to my geese! Muscovy ducks are very quiet, in my experience, and let out more of a "hiss" than a quack.

If you have any interest, and have photos and plans/details of the coop you've built (or are going to build), there is a coop article contest going on right now! Here is a link:
