We don't have fire ants, but have a bunch of other kinds, and diatomaceous earth eradicates them. I go around our house a few times a year and sprinkle some in their mounds that I find.
So I googled if it would work on fire ants, and it says it would, but it's not the most effective solution, especially if they have huge mounds. In a pinch, I'd take the "not the most effective solution" for now as it's cheap and easy, but it sounds like you might have to find something else.
