Yesterday we suddenly lost one of our 18-20 week old hens. She (Loretta) had just started laying and we found her right outside the nesting box. We assumed it was because of the heat (105 degrees) as she had been previously healthy. Now Rose is lethargic, weak and wobbly. She will only walk a few steps at a time. She's still eating, doesn't seem to be drinking much. What can I do to help her? Is it the heat? We've set up misters, wet the sand in the run, put frozen 2L bottles in the run and having a fan blowing. We welcome any input...
Thanks!

They need lots of shade to get into, and I put flat hog pans of water all around my chicken yard. They will stand in them to cool off and drink. I would say it is the heat, especially since the second one is weak, but coccidiosis is fairly common this time of year, and some hens can have egg bound issues at point of lay. Just observe them. You might pick up some Corid for coccidia tomorrow--it doesn't hurt to keep in on hand.
