Newbie help!

I don't have any SLW, but it looks like a rooster to me too. I know how you feel. I also got a roo in my "guaranteed" pullets this spring. I used something similar to Craigslist to rehome him. There is also a Buy/Sell/Trade section on this site that you could post him. I also posted in the "Where are you?" thread for my area. Good luck!

Thanks for the positive words, Cowgirl. Since we got them 8 weeks ago, I knew there was a chance this could happen, but I just hoped like crazy it wouldn't. I wish there were a way to tell the difference (without doubt) in the sexes when you are purchasing a chick. It makes it so hard to get rid of one if you hear the dreaded words that one is a rooster. Now I am not sure if I should find a home immediately or wait until more signs that he is definitely a rooster. I've head or stories where people get rid of what they thought was a rooster, only to find out it was really a hen afterall. This is not the outcome I was hoping for!

I had a rooster that was so friendly he would sit on my lap and let me rub him all over. My city doesn't allow roosters and once he started crowing I had to find him a home. I went to Tractor Supply and was able to find him a home with one of the employees (one where he wouldn't be eaten!). I was very lucky and I know you will be too! Good Luck!!!

Thank you for the suggestions.... will try everything to get this guy a good home. PatMan, thanks, I will look that person up.

Your SLW is a cockerel, and the other 3 are pullets. Those "saddle" feathers are way to thick and round to be a cockerel IMO.

Also go to the Michigan thread on BYC under
'where am I, where are you'. Post what kind of rooster you have and maybe someone in Michigan will be looking for a Wyandotte Roo!

Yes certain breeds the pullets can also have big combs. I have a buff Orpington that if posted a picture of her everyone would tell me she is a boy because, her combs is huge. She is 100% a hen though because, I get eggs from her almost everyday. So I wouldn't give anyone away just yet. If you heard a crow though I am sure someone is a roo. If I had to guess I would say the SLW is and possibly the EE. EEs are really hard to tell though. You might want to go to the SLW 2011 thread and post a picture there. The people on there all own that type of bird and should be more helpful. I would do the same with your EE, go to the EE 2011 thread and post a pic there and ask. Try to get a good pic of the EEs comb I think that will help. I really wouldn't get rid of anyone based on people's guesses though. This is what I do when I am in doubt and I hear someone practicing rooing I keep trying to sneak up on them to see who it is. Good luck.
