I'm also new to chickens and I ended up with a SLW Cockerel, he was also my favorite, super gentle and all around good bird. It was a real bummer. I could have returned him to the store I got him for a refund but I decided to list him on Craigslist as free to a good home first. I woman contacted me soon after and he went home with her the same day. She had a farm of several hens so I think he'll be a happy boy. They even promised me a SLW pullet next year if he breeds successfully.
But more to the point. The SLW looks very similar to my guy at that age so I am voting rooster as well. A BYC'er noted that his comb was just to big for his age especially in comparison to the other birds I had of the same age.
Still awaiting reply from the person I was suggested I contact regarding "adopting" him..... No crowing this morning, but then I got up about half an hour later than yesterday, too (7 AM). His/her crow is so garbled and weak, I keep hoping and praying she is a she and not a he, but I am losing hope. Thanks everyone for the suggestions...One more question.... Will he have problems fitting in with another flock if he is the new rooster? I would hate to see other more established roosters pick on him!
Your SLW looks like rooster to me. We got 4 chicks this spring and one is a SLW. Ours is the most skittish of the bunch. Here's her photo at 9 weeks for comparison. Good luck finding a new home for him.
EE is a girl, even blended coloration through out the body, round feather tips not pointed. Enjoy her, she is very pretty. Sorry the SLW turned out to be a Roo.
Talk to the adopter about their plans for him. The lady I gave mine to had a plan on how to introduce him to the flock. If you find someone who wants a rooster, my guess is that they're likely savvy enough to make the transition as easy as possible. Chickens can be so mean.
