(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
Hi everyone, my name is Carla and YES! I am new to chickens. Don't have them yet, we are working on getting the permit!

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
According with the County law, we are allow to have 5 chickens

(3) What breeds do you have?
I'm looking for calm, docile and good layers

(4) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com?
I learned about this site doing the class required by our County

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
I am a Zumba® instructor, love gardening, animals and farming, but I live in the city, go figure!

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
In our home, it's just myself and my husband, we have 2 awesome dogs. We have 2 grand babies and we can't wait to have good egg layers we can call pets!! Right now, I need help with the coop! We don't want to build one, I'm looking for a pre made one we can modify accordingly with our needs. Any help would be appreciated!
 
Hi Carla and welcome to BYC. From what I have read, the overwhelming majority of bought coops are not built well and almost all claim that they can house more chickens than in reality.

As a rule of thumb, each chicken requires a minimum of 4sqft, so a coop would need to have 20sqft for 5 chickens. Personally, I'd consider buying a prefab garden shed and putting some roost bars in it - nesting boxes can be something as simple as a plastic basin.

Either way, if you do find a coop / shed that you think is worth considering, feel free to share pics on this forum - https://www.backyardchickens.com/forums/coop-run-design-construction-maintenance.9/ where members can make suggestions as to any adaptations that may be necessary etc.
