In the Brooder
We've wanted chickens for quite some time but because we travel a lot and we're busy, I've put it off because the more animals you have - the harder it can be to find people to care for them while you travel. With the pandemic and my furlough and the world being completely different, this seemed like a good time to finally bring home the chicks.
We brought home 14 chicks from TSC on April 1. 2 died within the first day or so and we lost 3 roosters to a dog. It was horrible. That leaves us with 7 girlies and 2 roos. The girls are in a coop and small run of their own. The Roos have a Little Tikes Cottage and a very large run.
We pretty much told the TSC kid to give us 2 of everything and we're not 100% sure we know exactly what we have but here's what we believe.
2 Spangled Russian Orloffs (Roo/Pullet)
2 White Leg Horns (Roo/Pullet)
1 Silkie
1 Barred Rock
2 ... Americauna? Black Sex Link? Wyandotte? Olive Eggers? (Hard to say, really.)
1 Old English (maybe? Hard to say lol.)
We love their personalities. They are so much fun to watch.
My partner and I live in a small town in NE Florida - we have six kids who are all adults and 4 grandchildren, 3 who live 90 minutes away and 1 is desperate to meet those chickens. When I'm not furloughed, I work from home - my partner is not furloughed and also works from home. We have 3 coonhounds and 1 prairie dog.
Because we've been talking about getting chickens for YEARS (particularly while we were stuck living in the Chicago area with absolutely NO yard and no way to have chickens) we've been kind of quietly reading and learning around here for ages.
