Thanks NFC! I have been reading a lot on here about those Polish top knots as targets. Originally, I only planned to get one for my son but then thought perhaps in larger numbers they would be less pecked at by the other birds. They are adorable birds, so I hope they will do ok. Also, very happy to hear your positive experience with the RIR. I read such mixed reviews and I went back and forth on ordering them. They seem like an all around good bird to have and our 4H leader really loves hers. She indicated if they were any trouble, she'd take them to her farm so that helped in deciding to give them a go. I'm excited to have a mixed flock and figure it will allow my family to hone in on what type of chickens we like.

Only a few days until the chicks arrive and I am already giddy with excitement!

That's the benefit of a mixed flock, especially when first starting out. That sounds like a perfect solution re: your 4H leader and the RIR's. Just don't let those that had a bad experience decide for you, each bird has it's own personality. And our RIR's were some of the most consistent layers.

I hope you'll share a picture or two of your chicks when they come!
