Hello!
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
I am pretty new to chickens. We had some when I was growing up, but I never really had any chores or work to do with them. My experience was pretty much limited to running like hell from the rooster that would chase me, jump up, and peck my butt!
In September, however, I ran across free pullet day at our local Wilco farm store (boy did they see me coming). So, I got up early, grabbed my 10 lb. bag of starter/grower feed and picked out one of each type of free pullet they were offering (a Rock Barred Plymouth, a Rhode Island Red, and an Easter Egger). I keep telling everyone that I could have resisted if it weren't for the Easter Egger - the minute I saw that I HAD to get one (blue or green eggs? I could literally have green eggs and ham for breakfast!) Anyway, I ended up going back a few days later to get some more supplies and walked out with a Buff Bantam and (you guessed it) another Easter Egger.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
I currently have 5 chickens (about 4 months old). BUT, I am also obsessed with hatching my own eggs in an incubator!
(3) What breeds do you have?
I have 2 Easter Eggers (Xena and Pastel - Pastel may need a name change because I'm thinking he is a rooster), a Rhode Island Red (Redd), a Barred Rock Plymouth (Rocky), and a Buff Bantam (you guessed it, Buffy).
(4) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com?
Every time I typed a question about chickens into Google, a Backyard Chickens forum was always at or near the top of the results. The people in these forums have been helping me with chicken and incubation questions for the last four months, so I finally decided to join!
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
I foster kitties (especially abandoned kittens that need to be bottle-fed), play around with web design, and like to watch movies.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
I currently have a bunch of kitties (I am quite possibly the only male crazy cat lady you will ever meet). About six months ago, I adopted a senior dog - she is a ten-year-old Chihuahua/Pomeranian/Papillon mix. I'm currently thinking about getting into homing pigeons.
