Newbie question.

:welcome

I agree with the previous greeters...I keep a small flock because of the enjoyment they give me. We do like the eggs but truly, those are a bonus. I don't expect to break even or make a profit on my chickens any more than I expect to make money off my 3 cats. I just love having them around :D

I don't give my flock organic feed but maybe would consider it if I had a customer base that preferred organic eggs as in @DobieLover's case. I don't sell any extra eggs anyway, I just share them with other people that really enjoy getting them.

Hang around here long enough and you'll find lots of opinions on what's "best"...it really is a matter of choice for each individual to decide.

Best wishes!

Hi and welcome to BYC and congrats on your new hobby. Organic or not is a personal choice, as mentioned above, imo also. Eggs used to pay for feed costs only when I kept my flock.

Welcome :welcome Glad you decided to join us! I don’t think that backyard chickens can be really ‘profitable’. If you already have a coop or can build from free and/or recycled material, have a decent market you may break even before too long. I don’t sell but I’ve had lots of people interested and willing to pay a good price for eggs from spoiled, organically fed chickens. I give eggs to friends, neighbors, colleagues and they love them. Many know the chickens :)
Yes, eggs are produced cheap if you don’t count the price the battery hens pay. I personally try to grow and buy organic but that’s my choice. My chickens are also primarily pets, pest control, compost turners, walking lawn ornaments and the eggs are a bonus
