Hi,
this is my first time posting.

I'm about to buy some chicks and I'd like high egg production, large eggs and a nice temperament. The store is selling a breed I don't see listed in the breed section of this website. They are labeled Golden Sex Link and I was told they are also called Tetra Brown (also not on the list). I'd like to know more about the breed before I buy them. I understand what "sex link" means. They say they can lay 300 eggs a year. What do you know about them?

Fwiw, I already have two rhode island red hens and have been happy with them. On the website's breed chart, they say they are aggressive, which I didn't find to be the case with mine. Even the rooster I used to have wasn't aggressive, although he wasn't chummy either. I also have some flighty white hens but I don't know what breed they are. They're great layers. That's about all I can say about them. Is there such a thing as a truly friendly hen?

thanks.

I have a very friendly rir. She likes to climb into my lap. I just picked up golden comets, ee's and silver laced wyandottes. Of the 3 breeds the goldens are the most aggressive. The ee's are the most passive and the wyandootes are the prettiest. Of the 3 breeds the goldens are supposed to be the highest in egg production.

I've never heard of Tetra Browns, but I know that sex-links in general are known for efficient production of lots of eggs. They are some of the best layers there are. They are a cross between two breeds that produces chicks in which males and females are distinguishable from each other at hatching by their color. I don't know which breeds went into making the ones you are looking at, though.

your white chickens are probably leghorns, considering they are flighty

I believe golden comets are a cross from a leghorn and a red, I know mine are quite flighty and not all that social with me, but tons of personality for sure (even if it's not very nice personality) they are reliable layers for sure. I am pretty sure I get 5-6 eggs a week from each of mine.

I would go for an orphington if you want something friendly. I am told they are super sweet and great layers of large eggs

Thanks,

bethandjoeync - I think I'm going to try some golden sex links and also some buff orpingtons. Thanks for telling me about yours.

Ariel - thanks for the useful info on the sex links.

chickaddict - thanks for telling me about your flock. My favorite chicken is a rir who seems to know her name, lets me pet her. She's never jumped into my lap! did you train her to do that?

I thought I posted this earlier but it doesn't show up. So, if there was a lag or something, and there are two postings like this one, then OH WELL.

I have a friend that loves her sex link hens. Says they are friendly and great layers. I would have gotten one but I had my limit. Good luck with yours!
