Newbie Questions...son wants chickens

Thanks everyone for the feedback. I think I've moved on from this style coop to more of a Woods style coop thanks to the feedback on this site!

Apologies for all of the questions. I'm doing a ton of research right now and this is the best source of info I've found.

No apology needed. We love it when folks ask for input before building a coop. It's great that you are open to suggestions. I can assure you that you will not be disappointed by going bigger. And IMO, Wood's style is THE best option, no matter what your climate.

Thanks for the feedback.

The exact coop I’m thinking about getting is the 4th picture in this CL ad.

I like the design and it’s cheaper than I could build and has to be better quality than the TSC coops. Not sure what the inside looks like (waiting on pics) but i could easily modify if needed.
Nice design for a few birds. I'd like it better if that welded wire was 1x2 instead of 2x4 (if that's what it is); way more secure. I'd put an underground apron of 1x2 ww around the perimeter, extending about 2' out & running up the sides about the same distance; discourages rats & other burrowing/digging predators.

Nope, no RIR's for sure for non aggrssiveness they are sooo mean. Barred rocks are iffy it can go either way. Araucanas not much experience there, do have an ameracuna and she's not a nice girl. Since you're doing this for a kiddo, definitely stick with orphingtons, Cochins, silkies or faverolles if you'd like your son to be able to handle them without any fuss.:)
Likely the norm...RIR's, Barred Rocks, Auracaunas... nothing crazy.

IMO it usually depends on the bird. My three RIRs have never been aggressive, but I do have a friend who said that their RIRs were. Mine have really spunky, cute personalities (although one of them goes broody once or occasionally twice a year :barnie). One of them once tried to hitch a ride in the car! The only behavior you might consider "aggressive" is the occasional peck at sparkly jewelery, etc. because they're curious. If you're considering Barred Rocks, I would make sure I was getting pullets. I once had a BR rooster, I would also consider Easter Eggers. I have two. One's kind of flighty and not too friendly, but we got her after most of her old flock was killed in a dog attack, so I think that it's because of how she was raised. My sister's bird is really ultra sweet and is one of our favorites. She even comes over for cuddles! Lastly, I would look into Speckled Sussex. My SS, Amber, was so friendly and sweet. She also had a really cute personality and would follow me around like a dog, not to mention how pretty they are. But this is based on personal experience, so I would definitely research on these more.
