Newbie to chickens with new baby chick ???s...need help from veterans!

I've heard that people use sand... but I just used stuff called "chick grit" - if you go to the feedstore, they should have grit in various sizes and they should note on the various sizes what birds should use what grit. One size will say it's good for chicks. If you sprinkle a little grit on their food starting at three days old, it helps stimulate gizzard development. It is not totally necessary to use it until they are eating more solid things than chick starter/crumbles and yogurt, but it's good to get them started with a little bit from an early age.

Hihi! I am a novice myself, but I noticed you were concerned about spraddle legs with one of your chicks. I bookmarked this page about using bandaids to help correct it from another person's post on BYC (hehe I wanted to be prepared).

Wow! Thanks again for all the good insights...

I gave them yogurt last night - nobody seemed to "go" for it. I was hoping for a show...bummer!

I am still dealing with the pasty butt situation. The worst part is that "Sam," one of my two baby roos - and my favorite, still has it. We have the babies in the detached garage and my darling man says that I cannot take them into the house to do the warm water method for loosening the stuck stuff. I've been doing the mineral oil and it seems to work, but it takes a LONG TIME! (Sam keeps falling asleep in my hands while I'm doing it!) BTW, I was going to give all my babies Norwegian names, since they're Norwegian Jaerhons, but Sam looks just like "Sam the Eagle" from the Muppet Show!!!

I think I've finally got it taken care of! I checked over all the babies last night when I was cleaning the box, and only two had droppings stuck to their tushies!

I did the next best thing - a little dish and a travel coffee mug with warm water in it. The pullet baby wasn't thrilled with the butt soak, but we finally got it all cleaned off. Sam, my favorite roobaby, actually fell asleep in my hand while he had his sitz bath. It was too darn cute. He usually falls asleep while I'm holding him, but this time was...umm...Wait for it...double DOODY!

I am trying the band-aid trick on Flounder. She actually had both feet under her and was upright (kind-of) finally. Thanks Mystic! (If this takes care of her spraddle leg, will I have to re-name her?!?!?

And, really fun news, you all were so RIGHT (Again, SHOCKER!)
My babies LOVE yogurt! How often can I give it to them?
