Newbie to chickens!

Thanks!! Anybody know who I should contact about Araucanas?

I met an absolutely LOVE of a hen that was a Silkie/Araucana cross. But I just truly love the Araucana as a breed and of course the blue eggs. The Wheaton and Silver especially get me excited :)

You might want to try your state thread for the best chance of finding local birds https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/270925/find-your-states-thread you can also put up a Want ad in the BST forum after you have 20 posts www.backyardchickens.com/f/67/buy-sell-trade if you would consider hatching eggs, there are often Ameraucana eggs offered there, occasionally Araucana. both breeds also have long breed threads, you may be able to find breeders/people on there https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/288425/araucana-thread-anyone and https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/...for-posting-pictures-and-discussing-our-birds

Kelsie gave you great links to try - hope you find what you are looking for. You won't find true birds of these breeds at a hatchery no matter what they call them.

Thank you Kelsie and drumstick diva!

I'm really hoping to find a reputable breeder to learn/buy from. The few breeders I have found online have a lot of valuable information about the breed and how the continue to strive for traits generation after generation. It reminds me much of what we do in breeding sporthorses. I love the process, the preservation. And in this case.... I love the eggs :)

It will still be a while before I buy. But this community is fantastic I love all the information that is so easily available!

Welcome to BYC! Glad you decided to join the chicken addiction.) Many of the breeds of chickens can become very tame, lap pets. When my children were growing up they made pets out of our Brahmas, Orpingtons, Cochins, Australorps, and Silkies, and now my granddaughter has made pets of our Australorps and Orpingtons. Since you are interested in Araucanas, make sure that you know the difference between Araucanas, Ameraucanas, and Easter Eggers. A lot of buyers don't, and end up purchasing Easter Eggers from hatcheries which market them under the names, Arauacana or Ameraucana (often misspelled Americana or Americauna). There is a good article explaining the differences in them at http://www.the-chicken-chick.com/2011/09/ameraucana-easter-egger-or-araucana.html. We actually have some EEs (we knew what we were getting and wanted them) and my granddaughter loves the colored eggs. Good luck with your flock.
