Hi,
We have a silkie rooster that has black, tary poo & I'm not sure why. I've started feeding them veggies and fruit a few days ago, could it just be his system getting used to the fresh foods versus just pellets? As far as I can tell, none of our hens have odd poo.
Thanks so much!

Try cutting back on the veggies a little.

Here are some photos of poo so you can judge a little better what you have.

Hedge your bets: give him a tiny bit of yogurt to help with his digestive distress. (Yogurt has live bacteria that can help).

be sure to get the LIVE CULTURE (danone has a good one) yogurt.
Has your roo had access to cherries or apple seeds? Both are cyagenic (toxic) > the pit that is and will produce black tarry poos... of course this is not the only thing that will do this > I have a roo that kept finding cherries from my cherry tree (smaller type of cherry) and he would eat them whole instead of stripping off the flesh as the other birds did (despite my best efforts to clean up any fallen cherries) and he is now a very ill boy.

Hey everyone,

Thanks for reading my post and trying to answer my question!
No, there aren't any apples or cherry trees anywhere near here...and I will get yogurt on our next grocery trip.

We just started keeping chickens in April, so I'm trying to learn as much as I can. We actually got our first eggs Wednesday!
