I do agree with one comment of yours:  people do need to read before acquisition, and it is evident here that not everyone does the necessary research....  
As others have noted, vets are no panacea....
Dogs and cats are good pets (if properly trained) only because they have been bred for centuries to be pets.  Although many other animals can be pets, there are no other species in which all/most individuals readily become pets.  Housebreaking is the most obvious evidence of this.  Or, perhaps, that in the US we do not usually eat dogs and cats.
Is it possible to love an animal and still eat it?
Just a note, pigs,and rabbits both can be house broke just like a cat. Even had a parrot cagedf train, would go to his cage to poop.
