I am wanting something smaller than chickens for my smaller backyard, and selfishly I have experience with quail so feel better around them I do not know where to buy them, how to house them in winter and prevent critters and advice would be welcome I want to get all the facts before starting this new adventure!

In my area I never see quail advertized on CL, so I ordered hatching eggs instead. Coturnix are fun due to their short incubation time and when they start hatching, it is like watching popcorn pop.

However despite hand-rearing them, I did not find quail to be very people friendly and not as interested in being handled as my chicken chicks are, so after about six months I decided to give them up and focus on chickens instead. One thing about quail is they can fly so while my chickens can free-range, I couldn't do that with the quail without having them fly away.

I tell this to all new people with quails, check out the stickes at the top of the quail forum, there is tons of information in there to get your started. Not being mean, its just a TON to type out

I bought my bobwhites from Murry McMurry Hatchery, they were helpful on the phone and gave me credit for any that died in the first few days.
