Newbie

They grow really fast. By 6 weeks you will be sick of them being in the house. Make sure you adjust the heat temp as they get older, the more feather the less heat needed. Make sure they have an area to get away from the heat too.

Unfortunately we have no choice but to keep them inside because it's getting to cold in northern washington state. We can't put them outside until April or May. My husband is going to build a coo for inside the house

We have people on here in NY NJ that have chickens outside in coops in freezing weather. Heavy birds do just fine as long as they have a place to get out of the wind and wet snow which is what we have here on the west coast. I live in central CA so winters here are mild and mine will have free range all year long and their coop when the want. Good luck

Hi and
welcome-byc.gif
I'm glad you joined us Eilleen! What breeds do you have? If they are cold hardy breeds, and even if it is cold outside they should be fine with some extra heat in their big girl coop. I hope you enjoy BYC, best wishes!

These little guys are too young to put out yet. One is only 19 days old and the other is 11 days old. Where I live at, we can't have chickens in town but my friend who has the older chickens live on the outskirts and can have chickens there. As soon as these guys get old enough they will be going back over there unless we move within the next few months to a place where we can have chickens, then they are coming with us. We moved them upstairs to the livingroom and they are a lot happier.

Agreed they are too young as of now and never meant for them to go out now... I was talking about 4-5 weeks from now as I had mentioned in a previous post. Since you cannot have them where you are living now making them a space indoor that will accommodate them and it cramp your lifestyle for a few weeks is what's important. Have fun with them it's the best time to make friends and learn what they are like and quirks etc...

As I'm typing right now, I have them on my shoulder but with a towel under them. They have become tame more so with me than with my husband and son because I'm the one taking care if them. I've started training them so they don't run when I pick them up and when I tell them "up" they get in my hand. They love being out and on my shoulder. Yesterday I had them out and both feel asleep for the longest time. I think they are getting spoiled.

Hello there, and welcome to Backyard Chickens! It certainly sounds like somebody is getting spoiled, though I'm not sure if it is you or the chicks! ;) Thanks for joining us, and I hope you enjoy it here!

I have Wyndots (sp?) At my friends house plus another two other breeds that I'm not sure what they are. One is a light tan and the other is a reddish brown. The rooster is reddish brown too. The chick's are most likely a mix of the light brown and the reddish brown rooster. They started off light tan with a couple of black stripes on their backs and on their heads. Now the pin feather's on their wings have come in and they are black and brown. I'm curious as to what they're going to look like when they get older.
