Hi! I have been wanting to get chickens for years and May 2026 I am finally planning to get some! I plan to get 6 from meyer hatchery. I live in rural nebraska so need some chickens that are hardy in all climates, but I definitely want at least 2 that might lay blue/green eggs. I'm trying not to be too attached to any specific breed in case they aren't available but I am currently thinking 2 easter eggers, 2 orpintons or rhode island reds, 2 wyandottes. I'm currently working on revamping an old shed for the coop and plan to let them free range during the day. I currently have a dog and 2 indoor cats and am really excited to add some outdoor friends (that aren't big angus cattle) to the farm. I love to learn so I'm excited to be here and figure out how to make the best setup for my new buddies!

Hiya, and welcome to BYC! :frow

You're in the best place on the planet for raising poultry! Be sure to check out our Learning Center as there are oodles of articles written by our members about raising chicks and chickens.

If you need a brooder for their first few weeks, there's many ideas in the Brooder/Incubator forum, just have to scroll through to see the brooders.

Here's our Coop forum too. Most members build their own, and some of these even include instructions!

We're glad you're here!

Hi, and welcome to BYC!

Easter Eggers are beautiful! Americanas are my favorite blue/green egg layers!

These are my top favorite hardy breeds:
Buff Orpington
Chocolate Orpington
Americana
Any Wyandotte, (Especially BLR)

Good luck, and I hope you enjoy your girls!
