My buddy has been raising chickens for a few years and agreed to let me have a coop on his property--he'll take care of their feeding and watering, but I'll visit them at least once a week and clean out their coop and give them fresh bedding (and pick up the eggs they lay).

My first batch of chicks met with a horrific end when my dog discovered how to open our bedroom door while we were all away. :(

My second batch of chicks arrived last week and are currently doing quite well in a garage setting (where the dog can't get in). I'm in the process of building them an enclosure that is more permanent.

I also ordered some Pharoah Coturnix that will arrive next week. They will share space--but not be able to be in contact with each other.

I'm new, but I have some good advisors locally. It's been great to find this forum so I can do more research and garner additional advisors. ("In the multitude of counselors, there is wisdom.")

from Alabama, there is some great info here! Good luck!

Here are my current chicks:

15 Easter Eggers
5 Cinnamon Queens
5 Welsummer
5 Dominque
5 Golden Laced Wyandotte

I've lost one of the Dominique to a leg deformation. And one of the Golden Laced Wyandotte appears to be "failing to thrive" -- I expect to lose her today or tomorrow. Planning to keep 15. Ordered 50 Pharoah Coturnix quail, but they won't arrive till next week. Might order some Red Jungle Fowl next month.

Welcome to BYC! I'm new too! :) I'm sorry about your first batch of chicks- that's one of my fears, that my dogs and cats might get to the chickadees. Have you found any info in your research on introducing dogs to the chickens? I've been wondering about that. I don't have any yet but I will be getting 2 Silkies this week, 5 guinea fowl on Saturday, and 5 Bantams will be mailed out on Monday! Good luck with yours!
