How old is your daughter? Maybe she should start out small, maybe bantams if she is going to be their sole caretaker. If you will be helping(IE doing all the heavy lifting) then decide what you and her want in the long run. 4 sounds like a good number to get your feet wet. Remember to build more room than 4 will ever need because chicken math gets the best of everyone and good luck. Oh and welcome home to BYC...
