He is very pretty.
He looks like a black version of my friends golden retriever when she was two, identical except for the color as his was blond. She always looked like she was shuffling along as she walked too, just had an odd gait unless she was running. My brother-in-laws black lab was huge, he would sit with his head resting on the kitchen table and watch us eat, only moving his eyes and eyebrows as the fork went from the plate to the mouth.
I think that a newfie would have much more bone mass. They have a wide chest and thicker legs, much more stout and solid.
So sorry to hear about his problems. I had a dog that was extreamly shy with strangers also, it can be tough to work with.
A girlfriend of mine had a young lab that started to turn shy at about a year old - it was always very people friendly, anoyingly so in fact, but suddenly became shy and was eventually terrified of strangers. One day she was home with the flu and saw the neighbor kids (young teens) call the dog over to the back fence, then poke it with sticks through the fence. Luckily she was buying a house and moved out soon after. It took months of work to get the dog social again, although it was never quite as friendly to strangers.
