Thanks!

I did build it, yes!

I had a fire a little over a year ago so I am really struggling. These chicks and 20 I've arranged on a barter deal from a breeder will be a huge help in cutting my grocery bill between eggs, egg sales and meat.

Sorry to hear about the fire. I am glad your ok and getting back on your feet. Barter away its something you don't hear people do to often any more. Used to be done all the time. To help with the grocery bill do you coupons at all? I know they sure help me out a lot. I match them up to sale items and save even more. It seems like every penny helps these days.

I do freelance web design so barter is something that can either work really well or go horribly wrong. LOL

As to couponing.. when I have a fridge and freezer again, it is something I look forward to doing again. As it is... I do it in the small when ever I can but with only 160sf of living space and no cold storage it isn't always doable.

I'm not on my feet yet by any stretch but I'm getting there. Some day I hope to have the basics again.

Hello! Long time lurker and first time chicken owner lol. My chicks are one month old now and I have relied on this website and the vast knowledge of everyone here to guide me through this journey

Sounds like you have your hands full just trying to keep something over your head. 160 sf is not much space at all. Are you still on your property or staying with someone?
My grandparents home caught on fire, ( furnace exploded) My mom lost her first born due to it. I was not born yet but I know how hard it was on my mom. We also had a neighbor 2 doors away lose their home to a fire because of a space heater. That was scary as hell. It was cold and snowy out between Thanksgiving and Christmas 4 years ago. They all got out but with just PJs on. Neighbors were taking them in and taking care of the kids while they tried to figure out what to do next once the fire was out. Animals died but the family made it out. I know it had to be very scary for you to lose everything and try to figure how to get back on your feet. My heart goes out to you for doing what you can to get back up on your feet.

My best wishes.

I was actually driving a motorhome with everything I owned from my last rental in Seattle (after living there for 30 yrs) to new land here in MO. New raw land, that I secured site unseen under contract.

The plan on leaving had been to live in the motorhome while I built my earthbag house. I had a bit of a cushion to pay for fencing, get the utilities on etc. Which is good since the motorhome and all in it (including two of my cats) was a total loss in the space of 5 mins in an electrical fire on the side of I-90. And it wasn't insured for fire, of course. :(

It went downhill from there. I've since moved to a different piece of land... but still no things like a fridge or a car. But ... I need food.. So chickens it is.
