I am hatching my first eggs. They are all hatching between 12 and 24 hours before the full 21 day incubation period. Everyone has seemed fine so far- when the chicks are dried off I move them to the brooder. This guy just hatched about an hour ago and I notice it has a fleshy protrusion. I'm assuming it pulled itself out of the shell too hard and did this. It is leaving some blood smears on the other eggs, otherwise seems fine. What is this, and what can I do about it?

That is the umbilical area where the chick is attached to the yolk while they are in the egg. It did not close properly. Any chick I had who hatched like this died. Im sorry.

Okay, thank you for the information! It looks to be getting a lot smaller, so going to give it a chance for a little bit and see. Appreciate the response!

It may close up on its own but risk of infection is high. Leave it in the incubator and see if it does close up. Ones ive had like this had a 50/50 survival rate.

I really hope that it does close up for you, it has just never been my experience. Its good that it has closed up some since. Good luck!

I've had about 3 or 4 chicks with similar issue from this batch of 16. I think maybe the peeping encouraged each to hatch a little early. They all seem to be doing fine as of right now. I'll keep an eye on them for infection and hope for the best! Thank you.

I have had many chicks like this, now lots of people think they will die but all of mine have absorbed there's and I have them today, just keep him in the incubator and let him absorb it he should be just fine.
