I personally prefer pine shavings or puppy pads and I've never had any issues with either. However, I always make sure to provide grit in the event they decide to actually ingest any bedding.

That really depends on how big the grit actually is since every brand seems to be different size wise. Since ducklings grow so fast at 3 weeks they're kind of at that in-between stage.Ok Can I use regular chicken grit for 3 week old ducklings
Ah, now there's the difference! You had a big outdoor brooder, probably with lots of chicks. I had 18 chicks, split between two large plastic tubs or totes. Wonder what OP has?

I know pretty much nothing but I was thinking that the ink on the newspaper might be toxic. ??I need to know whether it is better to use newspapers or pine shavings for baby chicks and ducklings. What are your thoughts. Which have you used, and what are the pros and cons of both. THANKS

That's true, but newspapers can be slick and not give good footing, and may cause leg issues. We use puppy pee pads with excellent results. Also, we don't get the dust you can get with shavings, an added plus!IIRC, in the US newspapers use non-toxic, soy-based inks.

Edit: slick, not skick. Sigh, typos.
Also, leg, not lef.![]()
