78 birds later, it doesn't seem like that approach is working out for your birds. Also requires you being there to intercept the dog every time.

I echo what Cyn said (speckled hen).

An utterly egregious number of deaths (1 is far too many - no amount is okay), all preceded by unspeakable terror for the birds. After the first attack the birds needed to be in lockdown until something was done to prevent a reoccurrence. Without question, the dog's people should not allow their dog to roam and you and your family should take every action possible to legally impose ramifications on these irresponsible people. At least until such time as you feel the threat has been abated, the birds need(ed) to be kept confined to their house and a fenced area - even a large fenced area can be assembled in a weekend using 6 or 8 foot heavy metal stakes to frame out a run and then running heavy wire fencing around. Must also secure at the base.

I hope there will be no additional losses and that the reprehensible uncaring people who let their dog do this will face severe financial penalties.

I agree 100%. It isn't fair to your birds to live in terror. I thing you either need to take care of the dog (capture and bring to a humane society or shoot it) or build a SAFE run for your birds. I do wish you and your family the best and I am sorry for your loss.

OMG! Are those pit bulls or similiar built to those dogs??????

I had a pit bull and chow that tore the door off my coop that was harware wired and wooden frame with hardened steel hinges with five inch screws into it, they still managed to maimed the door off and killed seven of my ten chickens IN THE CITY!

Called the AC and they warned the owners, they moved away a few months later.

I love this idea but how would I do for a black or dark colored dog????????????? Great on light colored dogs with black marker and mark them good that it takes alot of washings LOL!

OP - I apologize as I do not mean to be mean or unduly harsh - but I know it will probabl sound this way...again apologies in advance...


YOU have LET this dog KILL 78 of your and your children's chickens...After the first (or no more than 2nd time) I would not have bought anymore chickens until 1. I built a safer enclosure for the chickens and put up a 6 ft chainlink or welded wire fence on the chicken area and topped it with net - and 2. after the dog was dead. This way no more dead chickens, my children wouldn't be heartbroken YET AGAIN, and that dog would be dead to not be a problem, and then any future dogs would not be able to get into the fenced area with the chickens.

This is definately the neighbors fault for their dog is roaming and at large, and its just as much your fault for knowing this dog still lives next door and is at large unrestrained and still putting an all you can eat buffet out in your yard for him to have.

If he comes back again after your chickens, DO NOT SCARE HIM OFF. Stay inside and wait till your dad has the gun and let him shoot the dog while he's in the coop or yard killing chickens. Its more important at this stage for the DOG TO DIE than to lose 1 or 2 more chickens in 2-3 minutes while he loads his gun. Sorry but true. I'd rather lose 2 to kill him, than another 78 in the next few months to the dog!!!!!!!

Shoot it, trap it then shoot it, trap it then CO2 it to death, if you can get your hands on a metal toothed trap, use it even - inhumane I know but atleast it wont be going anywhere for you to be able to shoot it!!

If you can't kill the dog - or safeguard your chickens you need to not get anymore chickens because your just feeding this dog's blood lust and your breaking those kids' hearts just allowing this dog to continue shamelessly killing.

Sorry but thats the way I see it.

Sorry for your losses, but you need to be proactive not reactive and be done with that darn dog.

I sooo agree with Scared of Shadows. I had 2 geese, 2 ducks and 13 pullets. A new renter moved in next to me and his dog was running loose right about the time 2 Geese, 1 of the ducks and 1 of the hens disappeared. I waited til the dog came on my property again, took her to the barn and shut her in and waited for him to come looking. I told him in NO uncertain terms what the fate of his dog would be if she ever came on this property again. She's a very sweet little Aussie pup less than 1 year old and it would kill ME to have to harm her in any way, but he thinks I'll do something and in this case it has worked. Haven't seen her again and haven't lost anymore of my livestock. If he hadn't shown up by the next day, I'd have taken her to the shelter, again I would have hated to do that because they give them 24 hrs and then they kill them, but I won't lose any more birds to his dog, especially when I have 3 that are kept in a dog run.
