I have my two chicks in the house, in a guinea pig cage...the kind with the 4 inch deep plastic bottom and the wire top. It is in the 90's outside, but I took the advice to use a heat lamp and just bought one. I also had a hanging IV stand, so I attached that to the cage that the chick's cage is sitting on and the lamp is hanging a little less than one foot from the top of the wire part of the top of the cage. I am soooo afraid of fire, and also afraid of cooking my chicks, so am I doing this right?

You can put a thermometer in there, but you can also tell by the chicks behavior - are they directly under the light and huddled up and peeping? Then they are cold, and you need to lower the lamp a bit. If they are avoiding being under it at all costs, raise it.
