Niederrheiner Thread! All Colors!

This chicken sounds like a dream come true for me. I am researching breeds for a new flock next year. I want to move from laying hens only to a dual purpose breed(s) that I can hatch myself. These hens are pretty, large, good layers, and have friendly roosters supposedly. Can any of you experienced owners speak about their laying rate and rooster temperament? Thank you!

Thanks! Trying to read up on both these and Bielefelders. They seem pretty similar. The Bielefelder looks like it might be a slightly better layer and I like that it's autosexing but seems like they're maybe not as friendly. I'll keep doing my research, but of course if anyone has ever owned or compared them both please let me know :)

My girls are laying fools and my rooster is one of the best I have ever had! And I currently have 10 different breeds, with at least 10 other breeds that I have tried and gotten rid of...

I've had both, and my Bielefelders were accident prone and pretty stupid. LOL I prefer my Nieners!

Currently, only 3 people have emailed about helping with getting the Neiderrheiners recognized. If you are still interested in helping please read or re-read this thread. Please look for my post that list information that I need from you. If I have not emailed you by now, I will need you to email soon. We are in need of at least two others to get this long process started. [email protected]

Oh, my. Your birds are beautiful! We are looking for a breed for my daughter to raise for 4-H. Something unique, but of friendly temperament. Also, something easy to breed. I will be following your progress with the APA!

@wleigh1021,

Yes Niederrheiners are great layers as well. Mine are currently outperforming my Bielefelders so I'm making some team decisions on some of those girls. As far as autosexing, the Niederrheiners are an autosexing breed too. Roosters have always been non-aggressive towards humans and my alpha roo enjoys getting picked up. In general, they'll hang out by your feet and follow you even if you don't have food. Our eggs are hitting Extra Large to Jumbo. I'm currently tracking hens and their laying. I'll have a more scientific number soon.
