Nigerian Dwarf Dairy Goats Blog - Triplets born - New baby pics

I haven't been able to post an update on Bitsy, with pics, because we left for Canada the day after she came home and then my monitor went out on the pc that has my pics stored but here she is - she's home and with her friends. We have to take her out for daily walks to encourge her to use her leg which she still holds up.

I think she's even friendlier since she was handled so much while at LSU.

Quote:
The doctor ordered 4-6 weeks of "cage rest" with short walks daily on a leash till the bone heals. As you can see, there is no cast or bandage since they put in a metal plate and 6 compression screws. Her butt and leg is shaved from the surgery, the wounds and incisions have healed, but she won't use the leg except to sometimes put it down and take a step but she mostly wants to hold it up.

They said she has a lot of muscle atrophy as well as bone calcified in the joint so it will be awhile before she's fully using her leg again. HOWEVER, she can really run and jump and act crazy on the three other legs if you let her. It's really hard to hold her back on that leash - she really wants to run and play. Once the 4 week x-ray shows the bone has healed, I'm letting her go. I think she will heal much quicker when allowed to run and play. Of course they said the joint that has fused together is irreversible and will always be stiff.

Bitsy finally got her "all clear" from the vet and can now be let out of that kennel she's been in since early August when she broke her leg. The latest x-ray showed a portion of the bone that was "dead" and sort of hole/"weak spot" but the vet said not to worry because she will keep the metal plate and the six screws in her leg permanently so it will be strong.

She is still not using it, in fact holding it up more than ever. The vet suggested we work her leg daily by flexing it at the joint that is stiff.

In any event, she's in with the rest of the herd again and by running and playing she can exercise that poor shrivled leg.

Here's the whole gang together at last.

Confetti is really, really pregnant and we don't know the due date. The breeder kept her in with the male for about 5 weeks so there's a real window in which it could fall.

Here's the udder which is getting really big lately. I know NOTHING about birthing no babies. Anyone have any idea how close she might be?

Here's the time frame. I bought all goats on July 5th - they were all delivered, except for Confetti on July 13. Confetti was supposed to go in with a buck for breeding but when I checked with breeder about a week or so later she still had not put her in with buck. So let's say she put her in at end of July. She returned her to us on Sept. 9th. I'm still estimating it would be end of December at soonest (5 months from earliest possible bred date)??????

According to my chart - 12/27 to 2/5/09...big window! My guess is the first week of January. Can't wait to see your baby(s)!

WOO HOO I'm so glad Bitst can finally be a goat. Best wishes that she'll start using that expensive leg of hers!

Hi Monique...
I am so glad to hear that Bitsy got her "all clear" from the vet!

I am sure she is glad to be back out and about with the others.

Are you planning on keeping Confetti's kids? I would love to have one with her coloring. I love her! She is so pretty. Who did she breed her to?

I am still waiting to get my second little girl. I know Bella will be happy to get a playmate besides our dogs.
