If I were you I would contact the American Dairy Goat Association and ask for a list of breeders near you. Their web site is adga.org.

We have Nigerians. They do have good milk but not alot of it. lol You also have to check for good bloodlines to get good teets. What part of Va are you in? We live in Va and I have a buck.

I live near Fredericksburg. Do your goats forage in the woods at all? I was thinking 2 or 3 does (since there are 9 people in my family). would that be enough?

If I was trying to provide milk for nine people I would get a full sized goat, not a Nigerian, but that's me. You can expect a full size doe to produce at least a gallon of milk a day. I have no idea hwo much Nigerians produce.

Well, I have small childern and I thought they were herd animals so you would need more then one. is that right?

Yup. Had a single goat once. Not a good idea. We called her Bouncing Genevieve because she would bounce over any fence. Once she got a companion she more or less stayed put.
