I keep food available to my chickens 24/7. Their idea of morning is 4:30 AM and mine is more like 11 AM.
In the wintertime I buy them plain scratch, which is essentially just ground corn. I mix it with warm water to make a mash and give them a warm crop full right before they go to roost.
