Nipple drinker issue- dripping?

Here's a couple pictures of my simple milk jugg waterer, yes you have too be very careful drilling the hole, and inserting the
nipple or you can cause cracking of the container. The proper drill bit size does make a difference in your success

Do you need a tight cover on the jug it bucket ? If so how do you put a heater in for Winter.. I just tried my 1st attempt of making nipple waterer..used a yellow cat litter bucket.. nipples on 2 sides if bucket...
every nipple is dripping steady.. I am trying to use one waterer for 2 sides of divided coop.. in the
Wisconsin cold Winters

The lid should be loose or some people poke a hole near the top. What kind of nipples do you have? If they are vertical(like in post #11), they are notorious for leaking and they are meant to be installed like in that picture. Also vertical are more likely to freeze, even with a heater inside.
Horizontal nipples are great and meant to be installed on the side of the container. Also a heater inside will keep these nipples from freezing. Here's a pic with horizontal nipples.

They are the vertical it's 1st time I heard of these and only ones that they had at my Farm store.. I just assumed it was the only Style out there.. now thanks to this forum and online research.. I have found out the difference s and will be order the horizontal one's like in your picture... thanks for the knowledge

Vertical does work but they need to be in there TIGHT... I struggled to get the nipples installed in my waterer because the hole was deliberately barely big enough. There also does need to be a way for a small amount of air to get in so it doesn't form a vacuum, or nothing will come out. I have a cord slot cut in the lid of my waterer which allows me to put in an aquarium heater for winter, as well as allows for air so it doesn't become a vacuum.
