Think I'll copy yours if you don't mind. Easy to understand instructions with pictures. I love it!!!

I have different sized birds in different enclosures and I base the heighth on the smallest birds using it. Heighth of their body + 6" and I figure 4 birds per nipple

WatWas... Thank you but I can't take credit for anything except writing it down and taking pics! I got all my ideas from people already having done it and sharing it here on BYC. So copy away!! Good luck and pass it along for the next wave of BYCers.

nina... There is a person named Neil Grassbaugh on BYC that is very knowledgable on this subject and it's based on his information that I set the height of mine. First, don't put them too low. If you have a mix of bird sizes give the short ones something to stand on, I used a brick. If it's a growing flock raise them every couple of weeks. The chicken should be stretching their neck up to reach the nipple. Mine are about 18"-19" above the ground for my birds, an EE and a slightly larger BSL. Neil provided a much more detailed diagram if you can find it. As for how many per nipple, I don't remember exactly, maybe 5? Good Luck.

One nipple per 15 layers or 15 growing meat chickens is recomended by the manufactrers and required by the big poultry companies.

One nipple for any less than 10 birds is wasteful and counter productive to the deign intentions. The industry s uses one nipple per 30 birds to ten days old then switches to 15 per.

I like using the nipple waterers for baby chicks because I hated having to replace the water every 2 minutes. It is really easy to teach them to use the nipple, too. I have a couple hanging around in their run so that they always have access to clean water even if their regular waterer gets dirtied. I still have regular "bowl" waterers for them because it gets very hot here, but the nipples are still useful especially when traveling!
