Nipple watering

Thanks everyone for the input. I think the first thing will be better buckets. I do have the waterers inside the coop away from the sun and up on bricks. Will need to make a trip to the big city to get to a lowes or Home Depot.

There are two common types of 5 gallon buckets... There is an economy line (this is what most hardware stores carry) and the normal line, this is what most food and chemical suppliers use... Check a local bakery, or some ma/pa restaurants in the area lots of food items come in 5 gallon buckets and with a little ground work you can probably find some for free locally and generally of better quality.. You can even try the bigger stores like Walmart and asked the deli/bakery area if they have any...

I went with a poly 55 gallon drum, poly drums are rocks solid...

I am trying to decide between horizontal and vertical nipples. I understand that the drawback to vertical nipples is that they can be messy (water dripping) and the downside of the horizontal ones is that they can get dirty from the chickens' beaks creating more maintenance. Any other considerations?

There seem to be many manufacturers, anyone care to chime in on which is best?

IMO horizontal all the way...

I have never had to do any maintenance on my horizontal ones, they just work, and can't imagine how a chickens beak would make it dirty since the next chicken to drink is bound to knock anything off due to natural pecking curiosity...

When I tried vertical nipples (the lower price enticed me) they worked when they worked but they dripped all the time and I tired of the wet litter under them in short, and after a few days I would have to take them apart and descale them or they leaked 24/7 and would empty the water container every day... I'm sure my hard water was a factor, but even fully cleaned and new they had a tendency to leak... When I use them I literally ended up putting a large rubber water bowl under them to catch the drips so I didn't have to worry about the chickens going without water if one nipple emptied the bucket overnight...

I still keep some vertical nipple buckets on hand for emergency backup, but they have been collecting dust since storage....

I say hoizontal I have 3 or 4 leak but I got 25 for arownd $6 on amazon went throw them and picked out the ones that looked good put them in and acuple leak but acuple leaked and when I changed them out with others they worked alsome. But I think it's a mater of opinion.

My vertical nipples have never leaked, but I find some chickens are messier than others when using them. If you have your bucket in a place that you are trying to keep dry, perhaps horizontal would be better. Mine are all over dirt floors, wherein does not matter. I think there are various quality nipples out there too, just like the buckets.
