Nipple watering

Thanks. Seems like most prefer horizontal. I'd rather buy one system that's going to work long-term.

Waterer will be in the run over sand or gravel so spillage isn't a huge issue...I'm more concerned with what will be easy and comfortable for the chickens to use.

The vertical nipples shouldn't normally leak. They are messy because the chicken will splash water all over as it gets a few drop for itself.
I had a problem (once) with the vertical nipples. One got stuck open somehow and most of the water in the system leaked out. This would have been disastrous if I had been away and had others collecting the eggs.

The horizontal nipples splash less, have a cup to catch a few drops, and are spring-loaded with an o ring seal. MUCH better design in my opinion, and you'll go through much less water with them.

The vertical nipples should be higher than the chicken's back, preferably much higher so they have to peck up at it and catch the water coming down off the pin.

The horizontal can be anywhere they can reach.

Since I have a metal feed container, I'd like my watering container to be metal as well for asthetics.

I found this one that I may purchase and install nipples in.

Would anyone have reservations about using this metal container pail for a waterer? It will be in complete shade out of sun at all times.

Can anyone recommend a retailer for horizontal nipples that are high quality? I'd like to order some today and get them started with it in the brooder so they're used to them by the time we move to coop.

Thanks! That's what I was afraid of.

It might not be water tight, and when you drill the holes for the nipples you will flake off the galvanization in that area and it will start to rust...

You also might have problems with the nipples sealing properly since the metal is so thin...

They sell buckets already with nipples in it you might want to consider that. Also if you give them ACV in there water you might not want metal. Good luck.
