No Animal Should EVER Have To Live This Way

I have had 5 dobermans over the years & am totally in love with the breed. I presently have 2 females that I rescued. They can be trained to leave the chickens alone. (or any other small pets you have) My recent rescue has been with us for just 3 months & came from the pound with a high prey drive. She immediately started chasing the chickens & the cats. Within 2 weeks she was a changed girl & is now completely trust worthy with the cats, but I do still keep an eye on her when the chickens are out, just in case. To be able to have a "good" doberman you simply have to mean what you say to them & be consistant. They are not the kind of dog that listens to a wishy-washy owner. If you gain their respect they will be your biggest ally & friend for the rest of their life. Buckeye lady is completely right about them being able to detect danger. I have always trusted my dobies when they "told" me something wasn't quite right about a situation or person. I also know of 2 rescue groups in southwest ohio if needed as well.

I have to agree with Buckeye Lady in regards to a Dobies temperment. When I was a paper boy in Detroit, one of my customers had a Champion Male Dobie who was in what was then , the best book out on the breed. He always made a fuss when I delivered the paper, but the lady that owned him introduced me to him, and all it took was a couple of words from me and he calmed down and was a big baby with me. But at the same time I have seen Dobies I wouldn't turn my back on for a second. It all depends on how they are treated and raised. Fortunately most of the Dobies I have encountered have been reserved but not aggressive.

I hope he works out with you and your family.

I have seen pics of animals like that on animal planet. How can people do that? Poor dog looks so sad and depressed. Good luck with him--bless you for taking him in.
I had rescued a cat like that two years ago. I was afraid to touch it for fear it had some kind of disease that could pass to MY cats. Turns out it was starving to death. She was spayed and declawed to boot. I never did find the owners.

He's gorgeous, especially with his pretty ears intact. What a lucky day for him when he happened upon such a caring, compassionate person. I agree that he could turn out to be a wonderul pet, he obviously wants to please and has been well socialized.

Thanks Everyone

He did fine through the night, BUT his GAS problem is horrid

I figure that once his body is used to regular feed and water this will subside I HOPE. He woke me up 3 times last night by sticking his big nose right in my mouth

A friend of mine rescued several dogs from a house that looked just this same way. It's sad.
Does anyone have any idea how long it would take for a dog to get like that?

eta I truly believe in my heart that he will remember what you have done for him.

At least he is waking you up to go outside-someone must have house trained him.
