I have just finished reading this entire thread. This is the most interesting thing I've read all year. Seriously! Nothing has captivated my attention for 16 pages of replies! Until now. Perhaps it's so fascinating because I've momentarily entertained the same idea, but never had an opportunity to experiment with it so the thought was fleeting. We have no roosters so there's no opportunity to try.

Also, you have house chickens! Wow! My back yard girls are so messy. How do you keep everything clean? My daughter wanted to keep the roosters that grew up from our "pullet" chicks so badly, she really wanted to try keeping him in the house. But we have 5 cats and a dog. I just didn't see how that would work out in our favor at all... so they went to live on local farms. How do you make that work? Like even with the crowing, it really echoes in the house. I'm really curious.

Subscribed to the thread now so I can follow the end of this fascinating story. I laughed so much while reading this. So funny! Can't wait to see the baby chicks!

God bless you,

I am an avid animal lover, I like them more than I like some people

Which probably comes as no surprise....lol We have 5 dogs, 4 dachshunds one of which is disabled and requires full time care and a the fifth is a half breed and he is awesome too. 2 cats, 2 bunnies (considering letting them due the deed). Maybe he will stop spraying my nephew as he walks by the cage before school.

And 7 wonderful hand raised chickens 2 of which are roosters and yes they live in the house.

My chickens live in the sunroom, the coops get cleaned 2 or 3 times a day which is one of the many reasons why I cant wait for spring. So they can go outside during the daylight hours. This is a full time job! Originally the chickens were supposed to have a coop outside which they do but I couldn't stand the thought of not hearing them at night if something went wrong. Hence I have lost my beautiful sunroom.

Roosters in the house - not one of my best ideas, I find that the ear piercing echo almost at times makes me want to check to see if my ears are bleeding......lol

If all this sounds crazy its because it is crazy but its our crazy!

God's love for His creation is abundant in your heart! That much is clear. I think it's delightful.

When the first of our "pullets" grew up to be cockerels , and the neighbors called the police to report that we had illegal birds in our yard, and they came pounding on our door before I was even dressed in the morning, life became interesting for us too. We had a rooster living in the dog cage in our house for several days until I could find a place for him to go. Everyone kept telling me the soup pot was a good home for unwanted roosters. But we had raised these chicks from little fuzzballs, and my daughter would have been so heartbroken to kill her pet. I just could not do it. So we begged a home at the farm where we buy goat milk from. Then another one started crowing about 3 weeks later and we had to bring him in the house to live in the dog cage for about a week until I could find a home for him too. Finally a friend of a friend had a place for him, and the lady who adopted him has become MY new friend now. So that worked out double cool for me I think. We saved the rooster AND I got a new friend in the deal. But yeah, roosters in the house has a very startling effect. After a week of that I could not imagine having him in the house full time. And he would be so sad to live in the cage all the time after having the freedom of running around in the back yard. I just could not see how we would ever be able to make house chickens work, though we did entertain the idea momentarily. And I've heard of other city dwellers who do it. But I didn't see a good way to make that work for us. I'm fascinated when I hear of people who do make it work though. See we don't have a sun room. So it would be a "free run of the whole house" chicken if it was in our house. There is no where we could enclose them to have their own room. heh

So your egg babies are going to the Momma on Friday? Is the egg she is setting still ok too? You think she'll hatch all three even though they're 10 days apart? That would be very cool. Hope you have 3 successful baby chicks!

God bless you and your family and your pets.

We are also city folk - we need to be country folk...but I can't imagine being without the conveniences of the city.

Unfortunately spring is coming and Rover, won't ever be stew, but may not be able to be here much longer after that. The problem is he is so friendly and never hurts anybody...he doesn't challenge you or really do anything bad except for the crowing. In fact, right now he is watching t.v.

Another problem is that he doesn't like the outside at all. I have to coax him out with his favorite snack...and as soon as he is done eating he is back knocking on the glass door. Then we have to let him back in..lol

He is a true house chicken, he lets you dress him (he has a diaper), he hangs out in your lap, and if he hears you laughing in the other room, he laughs..he even laughs at the tv.

It is just the incessant need to make that noise...lol

The babies are actually going to hatch next Monday the 10th, and I am really hoping that she will hatch all three..and if not...I'll be lifting my boob again lol

A hen will abandon any unhatched eggs if the do not hatch within 2 or 3 days of the others. With a 10 day gap be prepared to boob incubate and hatch the one behind in development if you give the ones you are incubating now.
