I have a buff who is approx. 18-20 weeks old and she has no comb whatsoever. The other buffs that I bought at the same time have good sized red combs...what does this mean? is she not going to lay?? she is the only one out of 22 chickens that has no comb.

She'll probably just start laying a little later than everyone else. No worries

Checking to see if your girl started laying. We also have one with no comb and is not producing. Her sister is laying every other day now (Started around Christmas). Wondering (hoping) she will start soon!!!

Post some pics of your birds showing the combs.

This is a very old thread, and the thread starter has not been around for 5 years.

I have two Spangled hamburgs, one of them has a pretty well-defined comb and the other is very sparse, almost non-existent. They are about 8 months old. I think one of them is laying, the one with the more pronounced comb. I can relate to the OP. Strange thing...

and oops...didn't realize this was a super old thread!

What breed are they?
They look very similar but might mixes and one just has a smaller comb type?
They are sisters - Bielefelders. The one with no comb had her nose scraped up when she was smaller, and it just never grew back. I have another post out there asking what effects no comb would have on egg production. I wasnt really satisfied with the answer "I don't think having or not having a comb would affect the health of a chicken at all. A lot of game breeds get their combs dubbed and it doesn't bother them.
Comb and waddles are decorative. "

I found this old thread and was really inquiring to see if the original poster had finally started producing. I didnt realize that he/she was no longer a member. I welcome and appreciate your thoughts and comments. BTW - her sister just started laying around Christmas time.

Thanks in advance

Ah, that makes sense then.

I agree, it should not effect reproductive capacity.
My BC cock got his wattle nipped when he was a chick, it's been half sized since and hasn't affected his prowess. Either has losing most his comb to frostbite 2 years in a row.

Thanks - I appreciate it.

I read a lot about how the comb helps them regulate body temp - or is a sign of health. So I didnt quite know if this was going to be a egg laying issue or not. Hopefully as the days get longer she will spring into action - no pun intended.
