No Crow Collars

I think it's passers by, but I live in a cul-de-sac so there really isn't much through-traffic, especially at the back of the house where they are; Obviously they'll bark at the postman or windowcleaners nearby and I think ocasssionally they do honk just to be let in, but i've been trying my best to ignore that so as not to reinforce that behaviour - Geese are smart and I don't want them to learn that I will let them in if they make enough noise.

Out of curiosity, where are you based Ephyra? Local laws will be different based on location :)

Haha I wish, anything big enough for an exhibition toulouse to get through will be big enough for people as well.

Plus, I think they'd be too scared to use it, they have some plastic flaps on their house in the garden that they freak out over so I had to tie them back.

Darn. Well worth a shot XD

I'm in New Hampshire, USA... we're allowed to have 2 geese here, but I assume they could still make a noise complaint.... Our town may be adopting a no rooster law due to the noise, unfortunately. Are you worried your neighbours will file a complaint on your geese?

Good thinking on not reinforcing the behaviour. I made the mistake of accidentally reinforcing a lot of my gooses behaviour when she was a gosling, so she pretty much expects to be (and is) treated like a princess haha.

That's too funny, but actually a great idea (dog door)! Someday, I'd like to have a predator proof run for my geese that is somehow attached to the house, so they can come and go as they please. The only thing is how to get them to put their diaper harnesses on themselves :p

Unfortunately, yes, it looks that it will be going that way because i've done everything else I can think of to keep them quiet - I'll just have to train them to honk as loud and as long as they can and see how they like that

I have diaper harnesses for my geese and they don't just dislike them, they are actively scared of them when I bring them out and they run away and flap! lol such big babies.

Lol! That's really unfortunate though... I'm sure this is a pretty common problem - Hopefully someone will come along with an idea. What about planting privacy bushes to block their view from triggers, and it may even provide a little bit of soundproofing for your neighbours?

Can they hear or see you while you're at home and they're outside? I find that my geese will call endlessly if they can hear/see me (and they seem to have very good hearing!), but once we leave the area fully (we have a camera on them), they stop.

That's so funny. Geese are scared of the most random things. My gander HATES popcorn bags. I have to hide them from him because he will go on full attack, hissing, screaming, wings flapping. But they're also just scared of any new object, period, in my experience. Did you put the harnesses on them when they were little?

Hahah yes they're scared of all sorts, Norbert has become very attracted to biting me whenever I move his water bucket; He's not afraid of the bucket when it's on the ground full of water but as soon as I pick it up to re-fill it? Better make sure my hand is still there afterwards.

They both occassionally hiss at the TV but it's at stuff that isn't even threatening looking, just couloured shapes and whatnot....weirdos..I'm glad their pecking hasn't been enough to break my TV but I do sometimes wonder....

I did put the baby diapers on them from the gooses mother when they were little...the one's with the safety pins? but they quickly grew out of them and weren't quite big enough for the adult harnesses for quite some time so there was a period they went harness-less and they just don't like the adult ones.

Unfortunately geese honk when they’re startled, they honk to communicate, they honk to say “all’s well,” and they honk to try to contact flock members that aren't in sight. A normal goose is a loud goose so there isn’t any method to make them quieter that wouldn’t in some way be harmful to them.

It’s worrying that your neighbors aren’t more understanding but there’s a lot of awful people out there. Unless your neighbors can be reasoned with I don’t see any way around this, you may have to think about other solutions.
