No eggs at 22 weeks. Could be MY fault!

Thanks everyone for the informative responses! I did get some BOSS too, they were $19 a 50-lb bag here! Kindof surprised after reading they are $5-$12 elsewhere in the country. I may be planting some of those next spring to see if anything happens! :O) I would be letting the chickens freerange more, but they have gotten bold and started getting close to the neighbors yard on the side that isn't fenced yet(more work to do this fall--install fence there).

You did nothing wrong. My EE's did not lay till 26 weeks. But it is still way cool to get those green or blue eggs! Worth waiting for!

I wouldn't worry too much about the cost of BOSS since it should really only be fed as a treat like scratch so you won't go through it real fast. $19 for a 50 lb bag is actually a good price (at least for around here). You are doing nothing wrong at all, they will lay when they are ready. I have actually read on here it is better for them to lay later since they will probably have a less chance of egg bound or internal laying problems. It will come, they will lay just have to be patient! I know how hard it is to wait since I am still waiting for my first egg as well!!

same here. 22 weeks and no eggs. I've put a hard boiled egg in the nesting box and all they seem to be doing is playing soccer with it. Giving them 100% layer food now with kitchen scraps daily. Come on....I want an omelet.

Thanks everyone for the encouragement on egg laying. I started thinking we had a couple chickens that were just never going to lay. We have an australorp & a barred rock both are 24 weeks old now and no eggs. They roam the yard free and have been on egg laying feed since 16 weeks. They have also had oyster shell mixed into the feed. So we are just going to be patient after reading all your comments. I just love this site and it's my go to place for any questions I have.This is our first time raising chickens and we just love them.
They eat alot of grass being in the yard and I'm wondering if they are getting enough of their food also? I know they are eating it for sure but I guess you always just wonder about these things.

Finally....almost 24 weeks for the 1st egg. Now gathering 1 per day from coop. I have 6 ladies.

That's great. Happy for you that your getting eggs now. I still have not and our chickens are about 25-26 weeks. I think since I am in Post Falls, Idaho the daylight hours are getting shorter and it's now going to be too late. I am fine with it and will wait until spring.We have a barred rock and an australorp and the australorp really squats when I pet her but still nothing. Eggs or not we still love having them and watching them as they can be a bit comical.
They have been roaming in the yard everyday for about a month or more now and I'm wondering if they are getting enough nutrients from what they eat because I don't think they are eating as much of their food now? If chickens roamed the farm years ago without all the fancy chicken feed and did fine then mine should be fine?
