Bright red combs, and larger red wattles will indicate egg readiness. My first layers were a solid 6 months old before they started. My second batch was about the same. I have had some pullets lay closer to 7-8 months.
The "egg squat" is a good indicator, if you are used to interacting with them. They will put their wings out, and drop down low, and hold still.
If you have the nests ready, you can put a couple golfballs or wooden eggs in there to give them a hint....
It won't make them lay faster, but when they do, they may figure out that the ready made nests are the place to go, and not under the deck or out in the field.
Unless of course, you like egg hunts!!
