No eggs- new chickens!!!

We do give them mealworms and they love them. My wife also makes the hot/warm oatmeal and they just scoff it down!

Will be good to supplement w/ calcium (crushed oyster shell) to strengthen their egg shell in case some are already laying but eggs shells were weak therefore end up breaking and being eaten. I have that first hand experience with some of my new layers couple of years ago.

I know winter is approaching and I don't intend to light their small coop, although I have wired it. Could it be that we have only been relying on layer
feed. We have not supplemented them with oyster shell
Bad timing to hope for continued laying. Winter is here and some breeds are much more light needy than others. My Speckled Sussex simply went on walkabout - I doubt they will begin laying again until February.
"They are reputed to lay well through the winter months." My Ameraucana and EE are still laying!!!

IF they are still laying it is out in the free range but to date I have not found the place. Unlikely but the SS do tend to lay outside the nest if given the chance.
For those chickens that are still laying I would certainly add the oyster shell or ground up egg shells.

Thank you bonsai. I have only one laying, our smallest chicken, a Buff Orpington. She's been laying for quite awhile. We are now supplementing her with oyster shells. I appreciate the info. We've waited this long. February isn't too far away! LOL!

Thank you Spartan. Just started with the oyster shells.
