No EGGS!!

I took in a really good barn cat. He lived in the barn and would take down rats nearly his size! Is that an option?

I wish it were an option for me... alas I feel training to NOT take chicks would be an issue here. But haven't ruled it out completely. :)

Amazon has a roller bar that you add to the top of a 10 gallon bucket. You put bait on the middle of the roller bar. Rats run across the bar, slide off into the bucket of water. Then drown. My sister has one and swears by it. That way a chicken, cat, dog won’t fall victim.

Depends on breed. I’ve got a four year RIR who lays 5 eggs a week still. But she takes time to molt. If your entire flock is the same age, they might be molting and slowing down for the winter.

it's actually still summery weather up here so I don't think its that yet.
Molting is dictated by length of day and night, not temperature, and can start as early as August. Some birds will stop laying well before the feathers start to fly.
