Hello All,

I am ready to adopt a few chickens but chickens are not allowed in the city of Cartersville, GA! I contacted the my councilman and he said there is no interested in changing the ordinances. I am wondering how a few chickens in a tasteful coop could be any more offensive than the local chemical plant, railroad, early morning school buses and garbage trucks, loud motorcycles, neighbor's barking dog, etc. What to do? Suggestions are appreciated.

OK, while I live in Australia, Councils all over the world are the same I think

We are allowed to have 6 hens (no roosters).

I totally agree with you that hens are way less ‘annoying’ and less noisy than barking dogs, noisy wild birdlife, cars, bikes, screaming children, loud music etc but how to go about changing the rules is tricky; especially if you have been told they have “no interest in changing the ordinances”.

One person on their own probably does not stand much chance but if you were able to find like minded people in your area who would also like to keep some hens, this would be a start. Also, maybe chat to your neighbours to see if anyone has any valid objections to hens in the neighbourhood. If the general consensus is that they do not mind, you could petition Council, with that and the support of others who want to keep hens.

Hopefully you will get a few responses to your Poll from Cartesville which may also help.

I would definitely advise against going ahead and getting them anyway because even though they do not crow, hens can sometimes be quite noisy when being stalked by the neighbours cat! (Don’t even start me on that one!!) or when announcing they have laid an egg and it will not take long for them to advertise that they are in residence. One complaint could bring Council down on you and you will probably have to get rid of them. By this time you will have become very attached as these gals worm their way into your heart very quickly

I wish you all the best in your endeavour and hope you are successful.

Thanks for the encouraging words. Also have a hawks nest in a tree behind my house. Lots of hurtles but I look forward to fresh eggs someday!

I am moving to Cartersville and I can't believe I just saw your post! I want chickens badly!!! I am moving from AZ and have a farm next to me I get eggs from. No way I can go back to store bought! I will do anything to help get rules changed so we can have chickens!

Bartow county allows chicken on greater than 2 acres, but no livestock in city limits.

from what i heard today chickens are being allowed in city limits but only a certain number, i think if no roosters it would be great i don't care to be hearing the rooster crowing at 5 am or even 6 am. I only want to raise chickens for eggs really but whatever there is to sign that will make it ok to have them in the city limits send it to me i'll try to get signatures also. I want some fresh food by gosh and fresh eggs are the best and taste delicious.

thanks for posting

you are not the only one many of us want to be able to at least have chickens
