It's sad that the laws about keeping chickens are so restrictive here. We are way, way under the wire here in uber touristy Monterey Bay (Central CA). In a way it's maybe almost easier keeping chickens here because people don't even recognize them as chickens, or the chicken tractor as a coop.

SilkieChicken! I just saw your post today! HA HA! Who'd a thunk we have REAL dirt roads, huh?!? HA HA The MythBusters guys recently did a dirt road myth and BUILT a dirt road...we are about an hour and a half away from downtown LA and have plenty already "built"! HA HA I guess they didn't know!

Yea, the restrictions can be frustrating here! HA HA! We can have 2 chickens per 3500 sq ft of land. We have a little under a 1/2 acre, so we are allowed 10 chickens. :-( We are allowed 4 dogs, but one dog can be replaced with a pig. We used to be allowed goats, but I think that changed too. Oh....and cows..now that is a joke. The City says that one cow is allowed with a Conditional Use Permit for educational purposes! But, we can have 2 horses. I don't get their rules...but we get chickens, so I can't complain! Being SoCal...I am happy to be able to have them.

I live in a really urban part of Fresno, walking distance to a library, a high school, and a Burger King, among other things.
My birds are legal nonetheless because we are in a county island. I like to keep my head low though, in case we get incorporated into the city.

originally from back east and been here since 88

i know that my chickens are legal, but i still try and
keep a low profile. you always get the feeling that
someone could raise a stink and next thing you know,
animal control at the door.

granted i am biased, being on a chicken website, but
i cannot imagine a better city pet. they give me eggs
for crying out loud!

everywhere in cali is expensive now. recession my butt.
i have looked at property in the "country" and its still
way way overpriced.

guess i'll wait until i retire

It is pretty there and the weather is almost always the same. But I hate fog!! I lived in Ventura county for 36 yrs, and I don't like the beach!!Yet I have lived very near the beach most of my life. I much prefere the mts. It is where I belong.

okto- I agree that CA is waay overpriced, But up here in Frazier Park the prices are not that bad. There is a lot next to us 5 acres with 1/2 interest in our well. It has a driveway, poured pad for a house/modular(mobile) and electric, don't know if it has a septic or not. But anyway they are asking $268,000 (I just threw out the paper on it yesterday but I think that is the price.) There are a lot of places up here that don't have much property and the houses are decent. Most of them are under $300,000. There are small ones (1bd) in town for under $200,000. There are several HOA's here(which we will NOT live in) but not everything up here is.

Everyone up here agrees that the valley we live in is THE most beatuiful spot up here.

Right now I am trying to get my ankle finished healing so I can find a job. My DH commutes to Santa Paula every day. Our friends and family think that driving an hour and fifteen min. is ridiculous. But when we lived in Port Hueneme which is about 22 mi. from Santa Paula it took him 45min to drive to work and almost an hour to get home!
When he was still out in the field working construction sometimes he was driving 2hrs. one way each day. So he doesn't mind the drive at all, especially coming home because knows he is coming home to peace and quiet and beauty.

So What I took so long to say is that most people either work at home or work of the mtn.

We have hens here in unincorporated Riverside. I am new to hen keeping and am having so much fun with it! I love hearing their little clucking noises. It makes our home feel so homey.

Just spent the whole day revamping and modifying the coop and love the new set-up. (Now I can get the eggs without having to walk into the coop, thanks to a little door into the nest box...) Thinking of adding a rooster to the mix. I think RIR roosters are so beautiful. I think my neighbors would kill me though. They are now trying to pass an ordinance in my county that roosters would have to be kept in an acoustic barrier or some such nonsense. I personally love the cock-a-doodle-doos, but I guess some grumps are not loving the singing...
