No More Chicks At Retail Outlets? What do you think?

im new to chickens and i got mine at rural king in Columbus Indiana i am very happy with them none have had any problems and it is nice for us that dont want or have room for the 25 chick min from the hatcheries to be able to go buy 5 or so chicks thank you

These are only my observations, musings and suspicions.

The culture is at such a conflicted place between the various temperaments of the customers, that chicks seem destined to no longer be seen in bins, going forward. Unrestrained, unruly kids? Oblivious parents? Stressed out employees dealing with folks who haven't a clue about animal husbandry and animal rights activists all in a retail store, at the same time, during Chick Days? A recipe for an unmanageable situation, I suspect. Thus, the seemingly endless stream of rants on the subject here of late.

Are gates guarding the chicks merely step one? I suspect so.

Yay for that store manager! I'm glad she made the mom be responsible. People are so irresponsible these days, it drives me crazy!

As much as I love to go look at the little chicks in the bins, I am of the opinion that maybe it is for the best if they do stop carrying them. The chicks would probably be better off.

My first chick purchase was from Tractor Supply and they had missexed 4 out of 7 that were supposed to be pullets and they had only been there around 2 hours so I don't think customers had mixed them up.

I hate to say it, but I agree that this is only the beginning of the restrictions we are going to see.

Why should a store give up doing what they do because of peoples lack of respect and irresponsible behavior? Personally I would rather see people being held accountable for their actions for a change. Accountability and taking responsibility for ones actions is something that is seriously lacking with a large percentage of the population.

TSC doesn't sex their chicks. That is done at the hatchery. So it is quite likely it was a customer or kid playing with the chicks.

Do you think we will simply see retail stores mimic the hatcheries' store front? No more displaying of chicks in bins?
Walk up to a counter with an order, wait a few minutes, and a clerk comes with a box, "Here are your chicks, pay the cashier up front, and thank you for shopping ACME feed store"?

or put them in a glass display case, like the jewelry... that is locked and only an employee has the key. You could point at the one you want, and the employee walks you to the check-out counter with the animal to ensure it gets paid for and goes home with you.

It is awful the way parents and children are these days. Back in the day I would hsve got my rear end fired up for even touching an item in a store without permission let alone a chick that could be hurt very easily and I would have got it right then and there at the store.I hear people say I dont believe in spanking it teaches violence. REALLY! I can probbly count on one hand how many times I actually got spanked but I KNEW that I could or would if I didnt behave. That is the differenc3e today. Kids and adults know that there are no consenquences for there actions and they feel they can do anything they please. So what if a life dies oh well just make another. And most of all I hate the counting a parent does. The other day a little boy was running wild his dad chasing him all over and kept say dont make me count then 1 2 2 1/2 but no follow through. The kid just laughed at his dad. It is really sad. Feed store have been selling chicks this way for ions and to have to stop this service because of irresponable people is just sad. I remember as a kid Grandpa taking me telling me about when he was a kid raising chickens maybe thats why I wanted to but made sure I was at a place in my life that I knew I could take on the responsibility to do it. I love taking care of the chicks at the store and yes its frustrating to see people so misinformed. I refuse to sell to people buying for Easter. That is why we have a 10 chick minimum. After talking to a person for a minute you can tell if they raise chickens or this is an impulse buy. If a person gets gross out at me cleaning a pasty butt I know they have never had chickens.

My kids got a solid, fast count of "3". They knew that if Mom got to "3", it was too late to change their behavior. I always told them, " That traffic cop is not gonna turn off his lights and just go away if the speeder slows down. The rat is gonna get punished...and so are you, so bend over!"

A lot of this is that today's parents are yesterday's "time-out" generation. They were never taught that sin/misbehavior hurts.

I think there is a scientific principal that says that all matter, when left alone, eventually goes chaotic. People are the same. Each generation teaches the next a little less discipline until society reaches final chaos. It is a bit disconcerting how quickly this is happening.

If chick sales at retail stores were just like buying chicks from the hatcheries, minus the mailing, would it matter to you?

Up on a menu board would be the "chick of the day" and other availability. 8 choices maybe less. Obligatory pictures of the breed, of course. Would you go to a counter to buy 6 chicks in a box like a happy meal or picking up a pair of brake shoes at an auto parts store?
Would it matter to you?
