No More Eggs

Really? I've seen it all over this site and no one has ever said otherwise. I don't feed layer because of the boys but even when I didn't have them I never thought to buy layer for the girls.

I agree with the others. Layer feed is exactly for that purpose. Are you sure you didn't misread that chick starter doesn't have enough calcium for laying hens?

Oh, and to the OP -- moving hens to a new location can cause them to stop laying for a brief period of time. They laid when you first brought them in because those eggs were already in the works. They should start again soon.

I don't think so. I read it last year when I was trying to figure out what to change the girls to. Layer is more expensive than chick feed around here. And I ended up getting flock feed and a 50lb bag of oyster shell.

A lot of people feed All Flock because they have several different types of fowl, chickens, ducks, geese, etc, etc, etc. Sure it does not have enough calcium(wait a minute I have not checked----just repeating what I have HEARD which is NOT a Good thing to do) so you would need to lay out some oyster shells.

Let me add, I have not heard this----this is my Own results from years of having chickens---over 50 years---and longer as a child at home. I have always fed my layers a good layer feed and the roosters have always eat it too, never seen a problem and never seen where it caused them to start laying either!!

Now having said that----I will say this---when I grow out a 100 roosters say, no pullets/hens---they do not get Layer feed!!

I wonder what started the theory that layer feed is bad for roosters?? I've got more laying hens than I have roosters, and my roosters won't be around as long as my hens will anyway, so they get layer feed. Too bad.

Look I get it. I'll be the mature one here and not talk down to people. Even though I'd like to not use lady words for a sour old man that's rude.

I've read that many people while feeding layer feed still have trouble with soft shelled eggs or egg bound problems. Maybe they feed a crappy layer feed, who knows? Maybe that's where it came from idk. I have read also about the rooster with layer. Which is another reason I choose not to use layer feed as I now have 9. Maybe it's high enough to cause damage to roosters but not enough for all egg layers?

I want healthy happy chickens. Not chickens that will develop problems from feed I give. That includes roosters.

Who was talking down to anyone? We all have different methods to share. No harm in sharing our own thoughts and preferences. Sorry if you felt talked down to, and if it was by me, i apologize. To each his own.

Do you give oyster shell also? Layer feed does not have enough calcium for hens.
Yes it does , my layer feed has enough calcium for layers.
That's why it's called layer feed!!

Just the change in environment can cause a stop , the first eggs you got were already in process when you got them so they developed.

I would give them time to settle in , chickens don't like change .

Offer them some interesting treats and they'll adjust in time.
