NO more giant turkeys for me!

I am convinced to grow a few... Just for the size! I would cut them in half and make two modest sized meals... Great looking bird. Just think of how many forum members you could invite over for dinner!!!

I got them from the local feed store. I kept the smallest tom and the only hen out of the 6 I raised, thinking they would be a breeding pair. But if they are BB bronzes, do they breed or don't like cornishX's? Do they have short life spands like the X's? The hen is laying. I may just have some big farm yard pets now.
The one in the middle is the one I kept, the others we killed.

BB turkeys do not breed very well because they get too big and are usually bred by AI. They usually do have a short life span like the cornishX's.

Deerman,

Which heritage turkey can get 28lbs dressed at 6 months? I wan't some!

My mistake didn't see the 6 months......yep thats a BB .. hertage tom will get that big ,but not in 6 months.

When I was growing up we would raise the broad breasted turkeys we would process all but a trio. When the eggs wouldn't hatch in the spring we would process the trio and the tom would dress out at least 50 lbs. We would have to put them in the deep freeze for a week then cut them in half on a band saw to even get them in the oven. I would like to raise some heritage turkeys next spring. Plan on getting some midget white eggs or poults from Pawtrait and maybe nargansetts or heritage bronze.

Somewhere here on internet--maybe even somewhere here on this website, there is a good pictoral instruction on articificially inseminating birds. I think but not sure it was on the giant guineas. I would think it would be the same principal on turkeys. Although I'm not sure my yellow spine would allow me to try to turn a 28-40 lb. tom upside down to wipe his rear end. :0O

It might be a 2 or 3 person job?

Connie
